🌱 How Plants Take Water, Minerals and Make Food

Plants need water, minerals, carbon dioxide and sunlight to grow. Different parts of the plant help absorb, make and transport these substances.



1. 💧 How plants take in water

Plants mainly absorb water from the soil through their roots.

Soil → Root hairs → Roots → Xylem → Stem → Leaves

  • Tiny root hairs absorb water from the soil.
  • Water enters the root hairs mainly by osmosis.
  • From the roots, water enters the xylem.
  • Xylem is made of very narrow tubes that carry water upward.
  • Water reaches the stem, branches and leaves.

🌿 Role of capillary action

Capillary action helps water move upward through the narrow xylem tubes.

Water molecules are attracted to the walls of the narrow xylem vessels (adhesion) and to each other (cohesion). Because xylem vessels are very narrow, these forces help water rise through them.

However, in a large plant, capillary action alone cannot explain the movement of water all the way to the top. The major driving force is transpiration pull.


💨 Transpiration pull

Water evaporates from the leaves through tiny openings called stomata. This creates a pulling force that draws more water upward through the xylem.

So water movement is helped by:

Osmosis → Capillary action/cohesion → Transpiration pull

Plants need minerals such as:

  • Nitrogen (N) – leaf and protein growth
  • Phosphorus (P) – roots and energy transfer
  • Potassium (K) – water regulation and overall plant health
  • Magnesium (Mg) – part of chlorophyll
  • Calcium (Ca) – cell walls and growth
  • Iron (Fe) – chlorophyll production

Minerals are present in the soil as dissolved mineral ions.

Root cells absorb these mineral ions through their membranes. Some minerals can be absorbed by active transport, which requires energy.

They are then transported through the plant mainly by the xylem.

Plants obtain carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air.

Tiny openings called stomata are found mainly on the leaves.

Carbon dioxide is required for photosynthesis.

Plants make their own food through photosynthesis.

The main requirements are:

Carbon dioxide + Water + Sunlight

Leaves contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy from the Sun.

Roots, fruits, seeds and stems may store food, often as starch.
